Any estimation when, if at all, European individuals can use the paid version of Firebase (Functions)?

I have one, how can European individuals use the paid version of any Google cloud services? Last time I checked only commercial entities were allowed to use the paid version.

Warning: IANAL. First, sorry for the pain! As an explanation, it's all about VAT (determining it, collecting it, etc.). Outside of Ireland we dump it on you:

https://support.google.com/cloud/answer/6090602

But specifically:

> “Business” status means that you'd like to see a potential economic benefit from your development activities, for example: using the Google Cloud Platform to develop prototypes or applications with a view to generating revenue in the future. Most software developers -- including affiliates, sole traders, self-employed merchants, partnerships, students and others -- use Google Cloud Platform for business purposes.

I can't help you decide what your VAT on the use of our services would be (this is the realm of accounts and lawyers). I know AWS makes a different decision than we do, and we're very aware of the friction (again, sorry!).

Disclaimer: I work on Compute Engine, but again IANAL.

Thanks for your answer, although its worrying we need to have a lawyer around to see how we can signup without accidentally violating my local country's VAT regulations as a developer who just wants to pay and build stuff :(

What is the typical rent and the typical salary (For developers) in Vancouver?

Rent in the downtown core is about $1700 for a 1-bedroom.

Developers can do decently well in Vancouver, especially if you are employed by a foreign company. I am not sure about typical salary for developers, but I'm doing okay.

So, compared to San Francisco, for a good developer, Vancouver is slightly better. However, for everyone else in Vancouver, it's a disaster, since the median income is much lower. This is why Vancouver is actually less affordable than San Francisco, for the general population.

Amsterdammer here, for anyone interested, check angel.co for indications of startup salaries. Keep in mind that the cost of living is very high in Amsterdam. Rent is easily 1100 euro or more if you are unwilling to share or live in a bad neighbourhood. This could equal 40-50% of your take-home pay.

Are there any examples of products that use the famous framework in production? The lack of case study examples on their website worries me a little.

They regularly spotlight apps on their mailing list[1].

For example:

- World Cup App Spotlight[2]

- InkaBinka[3] (Only the mobile apps?)

[2]: http://wc.complex.com/

[3]: http://inkabinka.com/

Those two examples are really poor, the usability is terrible in both cases, and the effects are not impressive enough to be worth giving up core features like zoom and copy / paste.

Yeah, agreed. I looked at the football one and it reminded me of low quality Flash work circa 2006... until I had to close the tab because I was worried my MacBook Pro was going to melt my glass desk.

What do you think about this one? One of the early ones. https://ziteboard.com

https://ziteboard.com was one of the first web-apps. Whether it's a good example or not - you decide.

tl;dr; Get your degree

I'm also dutch, I'm not sure if you mean HBO or university. I only have experience with university. I recommend you to finish your degree.

1) If you would ever want to move abroad, having a degree (masters) makes it much easier to get a visa

2) Although the content seems impractical now, the intelectual challenge makes you highly analytics which helps you solve problems in your future job in a structed and faster pace.

3) You built up a network of peers who are interested in the same topic as you

4) If its easy, just take a part time job to pay for your rents. When I was studying I got this 250 euro government grant and in addition with my part time income I didn't need to take out a loan. 5) My grades where not spectacular, no one ever asked for them.

As for future career prospects, having a degree probably only matters when you are getting hired by people who have very little knowledge of who they actually need. If you are one of the best in your field with a name, I don't think it will matter. I'm personally getting contacted for job opportunities on a weekly base right now, so I don't worry too much about losing my job. But the key is to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in software development. If you lag behind with a CS degree it is much harder to get a job than if you have up-to-date knowledge in the technology that is in demand at that time without a degree.
