Are there any opensource apps that I can connect to San Jose public library? I have some features in mind, like sending a notification asking me to read a certain page at certain time of the day. When I click the link, it should take me to the next open page. Surprisingly no such apps exist so far
Because it's engaging. Parents encourage the kids to join but never force them to, at any instance if the kid is disinterested parents want to opt out of the program
Thanks. I have no promises to make beyond telling him he will develop relevant job skills. If he doesnt like it after a month or so, he can happily walk away without loosing any money.
Thanks. Thats an interesting perspective. How do distinguish between a guy volunteering vs me finding a guy willing to come and work with me? Is the latter what you call an internship while the former is volunteering?
If he's doing work for you, and you still accept you may not get what you want at no lasting repercussions to him, it does degenerate to how you feel about it and present it. It really only gets into the nailed down semantics in my model when you're producing something for someone else. He volunteers to do work, you sink the risk of letting him, knowing you may still be on the hook for delivery if it goes bad. If things work out well, good business. If they don't you took a gamble, and got bit.
In your case it really comes down to intent. If you're out for free labor, no bueno. If you're out for helping him and maybe getting something you can work with at the end of it? Bueno.
I just know that even if it started with the understanding you wouldn't pay them, I'd still put aside something for them in the end, especially if the Quality is good.
Thanks for the perspective. Exactly like you said, tasks I assign are menial/entry level and make no monetary returns for me, but will be really helpful to the intern.
Thanks for replying and pointing out the framing. I am not going to set minimum hourly requirements but I also dont want him to work 3-4 hours a week and expect to see results. I said "making him work", because he will be ultimately working on my idea. But yes, the wording could be better. May be "collaborate " on my idea or some such thing
All good points. Why do you want to work here is just a dumb question for this purpose. It basically forces me to lie and say you guys sound awesome instead of just saying your company ticks the right boxes for me.
Have you ever asked your plumber or handyman why they want to work for you ? Same circumstances, there also you want someone passionate.
it's very different in some ways and the same in another. In this situation it's not the same.
There is no real online review of software jobs seekers. There is word of mouth recommendations of who is good at their job like with a trade.
In plumbing and short contract jobs it matters less what the company does, it's a one off job. If one were hiring a short term contractor dev then it would be the similar, not a full time dev.
For a full time software hire it makes sense to ask their motivation of where they want to spend most of their waking time. There's a huge different between someone just working for money who'd work at a pay day lender just as willingly as working at an outdoor lifestyle brand versus someone into that brand. Most situations will fall in between, but who would you hire, the person who has some connection to the field or something about the company, or just wants to earn a buck and doesn't care.
