I would happily live next to a nuclear power plant, the reason not to is mostly to do with "it's still an industrial site". But like, lakeside land where I'm up or down stream from it but can clearly see it nearby? Sure.
It's one of the rare forms of industry where if I was ever worried about contamination a cheap portable device will warn me remotely. Unlike say, Asbestos and heavy metals...one of which there's a bunch in my current backyard.
I do not accept the assertion that the content I host is anything other than my own to serve to whom I wish. Get your hands off my belongings, freeloader.
Or, shorter: I hold you in as much contempt as you hold me.
> If guys like this have their way, AI will remain stupid and limited
AI doesn’t have a right to my stuff just because it’ll suck without it.
You put it on the public internet, the public has the right to see it, take whatever lessons it can and do what it wants. It's the intrinsic nature of the internet.
It has never been ok to say, "[this kind of person] is not allowed to look at my page nor, "you can only look at my page with [this web browser or other tool]".
> It has never been ok to say, "[this kind of person] is not allowed to look at my page nor, "you can only look at my page with [this web browser or other tool]".
What? Sure it has. “This page best viewed in Internet Explorer.” “JavaScript required.” “Members only.” “Aggressive scrapers blocked.” “Random country blocked just for having higher proportion undesirable traffic.”
My bank app asks me to review it every time, and only when, I deposit money. It’s so transparent in its attempted manipulation: you just got some money and are likely to be in a better mood than other times you’re using the app!
Literally every deposit. Eventually, I’ll leave a 1-star nastygram review for treating me like an idiot. (It won’t matter and nothing will change.)
> Eventually, I’ll leave a 1-star nastygram review for treating me like an idiot. (It won’t matter and nothing will change.)
If enough people give it 1 star with the same complaint, it might. After all, like you said they’re trying to manipulate you to a specific behaviour but if it has the opposite effect it’s in their best interest to reverse it.
It could also be that they really care that the experience of _sending_ them money is frictionless, but they don't care so much about other actions (such as withdrawals...)
I would like to restrict you, yes you personally, from transacting with criminals… because that makes them more powerful and me less safe.
I’m sorry that your fellow humans don’t want you shitting up the place, but don’t blame the bog standard norms of civilisation on some sort of government conspiracy.
> We can go on a general strike until copyright is restored and the "AI" companies go bankrupt. Journalists can write sharper and sharper articles. You can refuse to use "AI".
This sounds like naive wishful thinking. Add “theoretically” after every “can” for real life.
It has worked against nuclear energy in Germany. The major protests were in the 1980s against an all powerful government and an all powerful industry lobby.
Personally, I'm for nuclear energy but this is one of many examples that a population can get its will.
All the anecdotes I see tend to be “my drive didn’t mount, and I tried nothing before giving up because everyone knows BTRFS sux lol”. My professional experience meanwhile is that I’ve never once been able to not (very easily!) recover a BTRFS drive someone else has given up for dead… just by running its standard recovery tools.
Next to you and your family, then, since you’re happy trading with their risks.
