Could a competitor with a subscription based business model sneak in and grab market share?

I very much doubt a subscription based messaging app would take a big enough share to affect Facebook.

Not to say that business can't successful make money. There must be people out there willing to pay for privacy.

there are plenty trying.

I think most would be targeted at business professionals that need a certain level of privacy. I don't see how a service like that could win over enough domestic users to make a dent in the market while whilst the are so many free alternatives with great features

Stripe all the way! They have the best infrastructure and security, you can build out any payments system with their APIs and now they even have treasury-as-a-service to build your own bank. Elon and Peter Thiel were early investors, I can't imagine any company catching up at this point.

We’re using Stripe and super happy in general. But they don’t cover PayPal (which lots of our users need), and also recently added 0.5% charge for all subscriptions [0]. Previously it was included. They definitely added value over time, but I would expect them to raise prices as well over time. Also their support, while still great overall, can be w bit patchy and much slower than before (from our own anecdotal experience).

I’m curious about the experience of others with chargebee etc as a layer that potentially lets you “swap” Stripe with something else. Is it worth it?

Thanks for this, seems Stripe is the way to go, I'm sure that Stripe has no issues with selling worldwide.

One thing I keep hearing is Stripe does not handle 'VAT' and all those tax stuff but not sure if I need it though.

Is this still an issue with Stripe?

>Can you imagine a better way to destroy social mobility than by telling poor kids that the way to get rich is by exploiting people, while the rich kids know, from having watched the preceding generation do it, how it's really done?

I'm so glad someone finally said this, I wasn't sure if I was the only one with the same theory about inequality and it is articulated well here. It's "cultural inequality", inequality of cultural capital.

It does appear that YC is no longer relevant the way they were 10 years ago.

Is there a "new" YC?

First confirmed case in Wuhan was on November 17th, and there were cases in Italy two months earlier? Any good explanations for this?

So China has first confirmed case in Wuhan on November 17, but there were cases in Italy two months earlier? How would anybody explain this?

It could mean that the pandemic simply started earlier, and/or that it didn't start in Wuhan at all.

It could also mean that there was some mistake in the handling of the blood samples or tests from the cancer Institute, and that with further scrutiny we'll find out they were simply wrong, and the known time-line stands.

All very easy to implement with no backend using Firebase.

Firebase was recommended in the post, which has built in security rules and auth.

Then the author should really search-and-replace every instance of "database" with "Firebase"; their advice doesn't work very well otherwise.

The article literally says "Instead, you can define an API that takes an SQL query from the client, runs it, and returns the results," so...

I can't believe we're at a point where I have to defend the right, but its actually the opposite. Most Republicans couldn't care less about race, but after constantly hearing how racist they are because of skin color(which is actual racism), they are put in this position to defend being colorblind, which the far left sees as the proof of their racism. Also, what incentive do white people have to be racist? it doesn't make sense.
