Also bizarre to myself. i shortened Neural Network to 'ML' because NN did bot look right. '40 ML' somehow got '40M'. Could it be server side. Sorry, I did only check now.
Why would you want security, if you get 'play integrity' for phones that received no updates since 2 years. Google's current security practices are more than dubious IMHO. Now they are not releasing any source for security patches for 3 month, to 'protect' vendors that are too slow updating. As if there is no chance for bad actors to reverse engineer those patch sets.
I have the strongest level of "Play Integrity" on a Xiaomi phone that hasn't received any updates since the beginning of 2020. Google Pay and co work fine. It makes sense when you remember that PI is not about security at all, that's just an excuse.
Elaborate please. PI on its own is just an insurance API for banking and similar apps to ensure that they can do secure compute on the device. It can also be used to check if the device that the app is running on is a genuine Android device, since no VMs or custom ROMs can pass hardware integrity.
Very old, unpatched and rooted devices can fairly easily pass device integrity check.
It primarily assures the software vendor that the phone is running Google buttplug in the privileged mode.
Remember, handsets running on ANCIENT versions of Android with no patches for years. Whilst seems to be important to raise under the Forbes article (rightly) fussing about a couple of zero-days.
"Custom roms" (whatever that means) can easily spoof the checks in the specific situation (mainly hardware that allows for several things).
I tried to use task warrior, however, a) I need a way to creat task quickly when I think about them (I guess I am being a bit on the attention deficit spectrum) b) I need a way to integrate a bit with time boxing on my work calendar . The problem is that the task warrior android or mobile eb apps app on mobile are really a bit of a UX nightmare compared to the cli interface. And while the plugin landscape of task warrior is broad, support for typical work settings is not really great out of the box. In the end all 'solutions' only seem to be a road towards meta-procrastination, instead of getting things done...
The mix is the centrist way of populism: I large number of people affected are not allowed to vote. At the same time the current government consists of the 2 parties that were mostly backed by already retired people or baby-boomers, soon to be retired. We have state elections coming again and the government is largely unpopular and has not delivered on other things, with economic prospects not looking good either. After seeing years of partially misguided 'rational' governments, Germany is clearly shifting towards a more populist path (unclear which political direction, but we all know who are the best at this game, particularly if the generation 'never-again' won't vote anymore)
I remember that Immich has a mode to not use cryptic hashes but folders for storage. When I used it it was somehow deprecated due to some problems, but supported. I actually stopped using Immich because newer versions run the keep alive via socket.io with a Prostgres notify, which does constant empty WAL flushes, triggering empty page writes on idle.
Great news! I triggered the discussion with WAL at the time but lost interest. Great to see that deva understood the problem! Kudos. Will give it another try asap!!
For sure it was not created for things like the web of things. Around 2015 I had so much hope for it to be usable for embedded devices (like using compression with preshared ducts), but at least at the time the complexity of http/2 were overwhelming, with the actual improvements underwhelming.
The license before was attractive before. I guess they will be switching. Maybe also to free fonts. From the article:
>UI/UX designer Yamanaka stressed that this would be particularly problematic for live service games; even if studios moved quickly and switched to fonts available through an alternate licensee, they will have to re-test, re-validate, and re-QA check content already live and in active use.
It is that existing annually paid licences are converted. The extra work for existing titles is the problem. And:
> The crisis could even eventually force some Japanese studios to rebrand entirely if their corporate identity is tied to a commercial font they can no longer afford to license.
Same here. Minor iterative engineering innovation has been the main theme for years in Germany. Somehow hoping for a wakeup call, but it is hard to be optimistic these days.
I associate “German engineering” mostly with Dieselgate nowadays. German-made tools are still excellent, but even there companies like Rösle or Vogel quietly moved production to China or India.
Not a tech company, but I feel strongly about this when it comes to LAMY (a fountain pen company). As far as I can tell their pens (notably the Safari and 2000) have stayed almost exactly the same for the past 40 years!
The only thing they tweak in these pens are the limited edition colors, which for the Safari they're releasing probably 3+ per year. I once met a guy who had a collection of over 50 Safari pens so I guess that market works out for them…
This is exactly one example I had in mind. I visited LAMY about 8yrs ago as we were paid by local government to consult local companies for AI and data analytics applications. While I was deeply impressed by the value creation depth at LAMY, it was also crazy how anachronistic the operation was.
on the other hand, I am curious as to what the perception is of technical improvements in fountain pens in the past 40 years that they are not following?
