Good to know there's a definite measure for that.

I for one liked it.

I sometimes wonder if there's an evolutionary purpose to our conscious self not being able to control some subconscious and physical processes.

seems like an inherent limitation of an emergent conscious self coming about through evolution

Not 200, like 10. Someone added a false one, and it found its way to serious websites. German source: https://bildblog.de/5704/wie-ich-freiherr-von-guttenberg-zu-...

Fortunately, they'll never happen. How are you supposed to get your connecting regional train if it doesn't stop at the same station? And it's often a huge advantage of rail that your journey starts and ends near the city center.

You're absolutely right, I meant seperate platforms and tracks that can (and should) be in the same building as regional trains. Like Berlin Main Station or Shinjuku in Japan.

A still from Jacques Tati's film "Playtime" (1967): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SS76YifzgN0/TBqlmteuTTI/AAAAAAAABY...

Probably true, but I suppose it's some sort of cognitive bias rather than a conscious thought out of greed or similar motives.

The classic quote on the topic is from Upton Sinclair:

"It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it."

If you ask people pointed enough questions, you'll soon find that their "subconscious" reasoning is just conscious reasoning that they don't attribute to themselves.

s/don't attribute to/aren't aware of/

Or have chosen to not be aware of. We live in an age of abundant information with many opportunities for pursuing self-awareness. But people are very good at avoiding thinking about things that would make them feel cognitive dissonance.

E.g., look at religion. They can't all be correct. Fully rational people would surely want to get something so important right, so they'd work hard to discover the sources of confusion and sort things out. Instead we see religions and religious factions multiply. Thanks to fMRIs, we can even see that "what god wants" is just people "unconsciously" reading their own preferences: https://www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/creating-god-i...

Sure, makes sense, and fits cleanly into the substitution I proposed.

Not even. If you don't take the roundabout route, they will definitely often use what Wikipedia calls "weasel words" to directly explain their thinking, in "plenty of" other anonymous people's mouths, in the passive voice.

I expect that happens plenty, but there is such a thing as the subconscious, and I don't think everyone who lacks a full understanding of their own mind is operating in bad faith.

Watched Nostalghia yesterday :)

A restaurant or company could use its own scanner app to save the data, but I assume this would be illegal

Technically they could - if they had the skills (a restaurant with programmer staff?), had a the reason (risking to alienate the customers?) and had the guts to go against GDPR (somebody will spill the beans). So...

I once wrote a brainfuck interpreter in Haskell which executes even incomplete programs as far as possible. It was really easy thanks to streaming ByteStrings and lazyness in general.

I'm somehow afraid of a world in which huge amounts of energy can be wasted without having a bad conscience. Probably it would lead to some new problems.

Not sure if poe's law but that's basically the way things are today.

Aren't you also excited of the new possibilities? I really believe that once we have left the energy crisis behind us we will witness a new golden age of civilization.

Just think of all the personal data you could collect!
