Are there any HNers here that run their companies completely remote?
I am the founder of ideatostartup.org, which is a fully remote company.
What issues have you encountered?
Running a remote company has many advantages over non-remote companies. However, obviously it also depends on the sector the company is in. Remote only companies are possible only for a few sectors.
Did you lose a lot of productivity? Is it harder to grow the company?
The productivity in remote company is generally higher because only the best developers can thrive in a remote culture.
Is it harder to grow the company?
A remote can hire a professional from any location on Earth. If you know how to access the global talent correctly, it will be much easier to grow the company.
I don't have a partner but I'm a very extroverted person, so I think I should be fine in terms of loneliness?
Loneliness depends on the environment. If you stay alone in a house for long, you will definitely feel lonely. But, if you have good family or people who you can hangout with, you will enjoy working remotely even more.
Hope this was useful. If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to me.
If you are into JavaScript, you should also check out : https://2018.stateofjs.com to know which JS technologies in general developers prefer the most.
Simple and to the point! My only out right disagreement would be on state management. If you have a GraphQL api, that means you are probably using Apollo. Just use apollo-link-state for your local state!
I have to admit...I'm not the biggest fan of javascript (largely based on old history) and the node.js craze has passed me by...but I'm open minded. I'll definitely take a look. Thanks for your response.
And I have to admit that I am one of the biggest fans of JavaScript, so I may be a biased. :)
I will give you some background about why we chose these technologies:
After working with several startups, we realized that almost all startups face one common problem:
They have to deliver the best product using the least amount of resources.
So, we were looking for technologies that would help us :
1. Build apps quickly using the least developer resources - (Save time and money)
And
2. Build apps that are performant, scalable and reliable. - (Deliver Quality)
And the JS tech stack helps us fulfil both the aims. That’s why we chose it.
Understood and well-reasoned. I am not completely against javascript...but would probably opt to use typescript if going down that path. However, I'll definitely consider your comments and the links you passed along.
We are a remote only company and don't agree with this at all. People should have flexible working hours but others must know when they are working. It removes confusion and sets clear expectations.
I have been working full time as a freelance developer at ideatostartup.org since last 4 years.
Working remotely has neither affected the way I interact with people nor made anything difficult for me. However, it may be because I live with my family and they have a big social circle.
At Idea To Startup (https://ideatostartup.org/), we have developed a ui framework "One-Ui" which helps us write code that works on all platforms (Web, Android and iOS).
It has helped us immensely in reducing the time to develop apps.
