I've been a big fan of https://alternativeto.net/ and using their "open source" and "self-hosted" filters. Even looking through the non-FOSS alternatives for a particular application/site can be helpful; sometimes a for-profit company will take a different approach to solving a problem and it will give me other ideas to consider.
Some of the information on there is useful, but I'd say that alternativeto.net is an almost perfect example of a bloaty & hostile website. OP's website is much more pleasant.
Seems it's always the same trade-off: either a commercial site with an opaque business model, or a weekend passion project which might go away when the hobbyist in question finds they have other (or more lucrative) things to do.
The most bewildering thing about the redesign is that the button to visit an application's website -- arguably the most important one since one would assume people are on the site to try out alternatives -- is now hidden somewhere far below the fold.
https://madeineurope.dk is by far the easiest to navigate imo, but all the alternatives are of course european given the website name (can also filter by open source).
About a year ago, I found a YouTube channel[0] which consists mostly of a really smart guy (with a proper background in electrical engineering) buying cheap electronics from eBay/Temu/AliExpress/etc, taking them apart and identifying the components, then reverse-engineering them. (Often followed by a discussion of how much better of a product it could be if the manufacturer hadn't cheaped out on a two-cent component.)
I'd previously had a barebones interest in electronics (think: kits with LEDs and buzzers in like 3rd grade), but listening to his discussions and explanations of how these things worked gave me a fairly decent understanding of how some basic electrical principles work.
I also recently watched a video series[1] that explained how microcontrollers (specifically the ATMega328, the one powering the Arduino) work, from a very low level that I've always wondered about. The key part of that series, for me anyway, was getting the chip off of the Arduino PCB and onto a bare breadboard. From there I went and read/skimmed the ATTiny85 datasheet[2] (a very popular "baby brother" chip to the ATMega328) which also helped me understand how these chips do things like PWM on a low level.
I've built one project (a simple PWM dimmer based on a potentiometer) and am working on another (designing a PCB with KiCAD[3] to replace the circuit board for a battery-powered LED lantern, so I can design my own sequencing interface for what happens when you press the singular button), and it has been quite the learning experience, but one I've greatly enjoyed!
[3] This comment is long enough already, but KiCAD is a fantastic piece of FOSS software. It's a full schematic/PCB design suite, and there are plenty of tutorials all across the Internet for it.
I'd like to try passkeys out. I actually tried again on Amazon in response to reading the comments here. But it just.... doesn't work?
I'm on a laptop running Ubuntu, I use Firefox as my browser, and I use 1Password as my password manager. I have both the browser extension and native Linux application installed, and they sync/communicate with each other (so if I unlock the native Linux app, the browser extension also unlocks).
When I open my Amazon.com item in 1Password, it has a helpful link to https://passkeys.directory/details/amazon which tells you clearly, step-by-step how to set up a passkey. Great! I love clear directions.
But when I get to the step when I click the "Set Up" passkey, Firefox gives me an address bar pop-up saying "Touch your security to continue with www.amazon.com".
Huh?
I don't have a security key. My laptop does have a fingerprint reader, which I use to unlock my screensaver (and it's integrated with some KDE keyring thing), so I tried putting my finger on that. Nothing. I opened the 1Password extension. Nothing there, just normal view of my login info. I opened the 1Password native application. Nothing there either.
Maybe it's a Firefox issue, or a Linux issue? So I tried setting it up on my phone (running GrapheneOS and their Chromium-based browser), which has the 1Password app installed. I logged in, and this time got far enough that 1Password brought up a prompt asking "Do you want to save this passkey?" I tapped Yes, and it then immediately told me "Unable to save passkey: For security reasons, 1Password did not save this passkey. The associated URL for this passkey does not match the selected app." So... does that mean 1Password is refusing to touch the passkey because it didn't come from the com.google.chrome Android application?
This whole experience has re-affirmed my skepticism of passkeys in practice. I think it would be awesome to have public/private key security on my online accounts. I think it would be great if I could log in without having to copy/paste passwords (when autofill doesn't work, or for TOTP codes). But I have zero confidence that this opaque stream of bytes will actually work to get me logged in to my account. When the 1Password input field detection fails, I sigh, copy/paste my username and password, and then forget about the mild inconvenience after about 30 seconds. I don't even want to think about what would happen to an account if the only way to log in to an account was via passkeys.
Microsoft also didn't do themselves any favor with that naming scheme. In the current generation (I think?), you have:

Anyone who's literate in English (and knows that OLED means "nicer screen") can immediately rank the PlayStations and Switches into "good, better, best". But with the Xbox, how is anyone supposed to know which one is which? Is the Series version better or worse? Is it a whole new generation, with whatever backwards-compatability implications that a new generation brings? I need a chart and I probably still won't be able to tell you if you ask me in a month.
Slight correction. Last generation was the Xbox One (already a confusing name because some people thought that was referring to the original first Xbox)
A few years into the generation they updated the Xbox One, putting it into a smaller form factor called the Xbox One S, and at the same time released a spec bump model called the Xbox One X. I don't believe any of these are still available for purchase.
The new generation has the smaller/lower-powered Xbox Series S, and the higher-specced Xbox Series X. Leaving the overall generation with seemingly no name, other than "Xbox Series" I guess?
But yes, the names are terrible because S and X both refer to consoles from last gen and current gen.
This is absolutely correct, I game on Xbox pretty much every day or every other day, I have been with Xbox since 360 or whatever the first one was called. I am still constantly confused by the naming. There also was another revision to the top of the line Xbox series X and the Xbox series X digital edition. I can’t imagine someone looking at the naming scheme pre-release and saying yes, let’s go with that.
(Tiny rant - and even THAT name sucked. Internally, since it ran on DirectX (already a name that only a mother could love), it was called the DirectX Box. And rather than come up with a real name, they got attached to their lazy idea and shortened it to Xbox. They have made miserable naming choices for this thing since day one. Since BEFORE day one.)
It's a pretty good name actually because it's unique, easy to Google, and is never ambiguous in conversation. It's all the suffixes that made a mess of it.
Switch vs Switch OLED is fine, comparatively, because you are forgetting about the worst (non-Microsoft) naming choice of all consoles: the New 3DS.
This lead to situations where you could have a new 3DS that wasn’t a new New 3DS, and didn’t play the games you bought with it. You could also, somehow, have an old New 3DS, a logical impossibility.
Anyone in charge of naming anything that just calls it the “new” thing should be fired for not taking their job seriously.
The OLED Switch has the same specs and is the same gen, just a different screen. Like the Vita 1000 vs Vita 2000, they play the same games. Xbox One and Series are different gens.
just like the person you responded to already said: cos there is like basically no difference between the two. unless you care a lot about screens (in which case you will know what oled means) just get the cheaper one.
UUIDs are 128 bit long but generally have a bit less entropy than that as they are not just a random number. Still more than enough to make enumeration infeasible though.
And just in case the magnitude of that isn't obvious to people, that means there are 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 total possible UUIDs. Good luck.
Okay, though, for very small hobbyist payloads, though, wouldn't hydrogen balloons be feasible?
Some quick math tells me that you can lift approximately a kilogram of mass per cubic meter (at sea level, anyway). If your balloon's full weight is a half of a kilogram, you'd only need about a large beach ball filled with hydrogen to lift it. That seems like something that would be attainable for an outdoor DIY electrolysis setup.
Oh for sure - in fact I believe weather balloons usually use hydrogen (not for demos, but for large scale/daily actual weather purposes). It's just amusing that the regulations effectively encourage use of the more... energetic lifting gas.
To anyone going down this route, there's a surprisingly deep rabbit hole when you look into "how copy the bits off the drive and into a .wav file". There are a lot of places where errors can be introduced: the quality of the CD drive, the condition of the disc itself, how fast the drive is spinning for the rip, etc. I didn't think this was a big issue until I got a load of cheap used discs, started ripping them with my laptop, and later discovered issues with some of the rips, even on discs which looked perfectly fine.
There's a tool called cdparanoia[1] whose goal is to babysit the CD drive and ensure that it gets a complete, perfect, uninterrupted stream of bits off the drive, and will use a lot of tricks to go back and re-read any data that didn't come back cleanly. I always used it with abcde[2], which was a wrapper around it with album lookup, tagging, and ffmpeg support. I highly recommend anyone amassing a CD rip collection take a look at it, both are still packaged in present-day Ubuntu.
Make sure you enable its MusicBrainz support. I used to painstakingly input all the band / album / track title metadata but then discovered that people were already doing it for me.
However, then you go down the MB rabbit hole with obscure music that no one has ever inputted. Still, it's a quick and easy way to contribute and then it's available for everyone.
Do you have any tips and tricks to share? I'm running a self-hosted instance on an old desktop PC in my basement for me and a couple family members. Performance is kinda meh, and I don't think it's due to resource constraints on the server itself. This is after following the performance recommendations in the admin console to tweak php.ini settings.
In my case, I want file/photo syncing, calendar syncing, and contact syncing.
Nextcloud provides all 3 in a package that pretty much just works, in my experience (despite being kinda slow).
The Notes app is a pretty nice wrapper around a specific folder full of markdown files, I mostly use it on my phone, and on my desktop I just use my favorite editor to poke at the .md files directly.
Oh, and when a friend group wanted a better way to figure out which day to get together, I just installed the Polls app with a few clicks and we use that now.
I am a bit disappointed in the performance, but I've been running this setup for years and it "just works" for me. I understand how it works, I know how to back it up (and, more importantly restore from that backup!)
If there's another open-source, self-hosted project that has WebDAV, CalDAV, and CardDAV all in one package, then I might consider switching, but for now Nextcloud is "good enough" for me.
If they make their own distro, though, they're not really gaining more control. They're just enabling even more choice for someone who's looking for alternatives.
Let's say, hypothetically, that Valve releases SteamOS to the general public, and it's received generally well, and it becomes much more common for people to use "that Linux thing" than it is today. Then let's say, hypothetically, that Valve turns evil and... I dunno, starts charging money for updates? At that point you've got a large population already using Linux, I'm sure there would be a pretty big migration to Ubuntu or some other mainstream Linux desktop.
