Zeal | Experienced Full Stack Engineer | Full-time | REMOTE
W2 and Contractor options available.
Zeal is a software consultancy. We work with a variety of companies, of varying sizes, and in various vertical markets. In every case our ultimate goal is to have them finish up feeling like they got more than they paid for.
That means that we have a great variety of projects for you to work on, with different challenges, and different business benefits to the client. This job is perfect for someone who gets tired of working on the same old thing all the time, and wants to be able to change it up sometimes.
Right now, we're specifically looking for experienced software developers who have worked on Rails back-end / React front-end or Node back-end / React front-end applications.
Our interview process is simple, and transparent.
1. As soon as you apply you'll get an email confirming that we got your application.
2. Someone reviews your application for some basic requirements (which are also listed on the application).
3. Next you'll have a short interview with someone, likely our Director of Consulting. This won't take more than 30 minutes.
4. After that we want to get some code to work on. We have a homework project you can use, or you can bring your own project as long as it includes Rails and React, or Node and React (depends on the position you're applying for). And it needs to be on your machine and ready to work on, because that's what we'll do together. If you use our homework, please timebox the task to no more than 2 hours.
5. Once you've got a project we can work on together, we'll schedule 2 back-to-back interviews with our engineers. 1 engineer in each interview. This won't take more than 90 minutes total.
6. After that, we review the feedback from the engineers, check your references, and extend an offer if we both agree it makes sense.
We hope you choose to apply. We'd love to get to know you.
Zeal - http://www.codingzeal.com - Medford, OR / Portsmouth, NH / San Diego, CA - ONSITE (preferred) / REMOTE (possible)
Zeal is a web and mobile development consultancy that empowers small to medium-sized organizations to solve huge problems.
Headquartered in the heart of downtown Medford, OR -- the center-point between the global technology hubs of Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California. We also have offices in Portsmouth, NH and San Diego, CA.
We're looking for Rails, Javascript, and UI/UX engineers to craft solutions to delight and serve customers.
Collaboration and teamwork are key. We’re pragmatically agile, and believe in a sustainable work schedule.
You’ll fit right in if empathy, enthusiasm, artisanship, and appreciation towards one another are some of your most valued attributes. We want you to bring a deep passion and excitement for the engineering art form.
If this sounds like you, we definitely want to talk!
Hey davidw, definitely a fair question. Truth is we actually started here and really want to grow here because we love the area. Thanks for your comment!
Love Bend! We've sponsored Ruby on Ales the last 2 years. We love that event and that area (Bend is one of my personal favorite places to go in the state). I'll look you up next time around!
What's the industry looking like in Bend? Are startups there focused on any particular markets? In Portland most smaller companies and startups are outside of tech (artisanal goods, food, etc)
There are a few companies here (even one that posted in this thread) that do tech, and a few VC's with one foot here and another in the Bay Area. There's also a decent outdoor sector, as you can imagine.
I love how Philip goes through the things he tried on the way there, gives away the winning formula, THEN goes on to give away tons of other useful information!
If you're starting a mailing list, or already have one, this is a must-read. Philip basically tells you what steps to skip and then hands you a winning formula on a silver platter, saving you tons of time and effort.
I don't know about everywhere, but where I live (Oregon), many of the new homes have detectors that are not only wired for power (with battery backup), but also wired together such that an alarm at one will fire all of them. The devices seem to be mostly ordinary smoke detectors except for that connection.
If we start with the premise that there are more people accessing email from a mobile device then we have to take into account how they're doing that.
I have the Gmail app, iPhone's built-in Mail app, and Mailbox app. The only one of them that filters my email using the new Gmail tab structure is the Gmail app (which is not my primary mail app).
This also doesn't take into account that there are still thousands of businesses that are using Outlook to access their Gmail. B2B operations won't have to deal with the Gmail filtering as much.
There's no question that the new tab system has SOME impact but I don't think we can simply accept the numbers in the article as fact in all cases.
What you're describing is no different than many educational opportunities, is it?
I worked at a multi-campus, private college that had a series of classes for the MCSE certification program. Many of the students had no previous computer experience that would prepare them for the topics, and were told by the recruiters that riches await in the fast-paced world of network administration! The unfortunate truth is that most of those students weren't all that motivated. It wasn't possible for me, as a teacher, to give them every real-world scenario I could (I was a working network admin at the time), but I did my best. If they weren't motivated to study and to experiment on their own, they weren't going to get much for their money. They'd pass the class but they weren't going to pass Microsoft's tests or qualify for many positions if they weren't willing to go beyond the curriculum on their own time.
It seems to me that what Mattan is offering is no different than numerous other educational opportunities. Students will get out of it what they put into it. If they want to copy/paste his code and not ask themselves how it works, fiddle with it and see what happens, try to extend its functionality with their own ideas, then they probably weren't cut out for programming anyway. That's not his problem; it's theirs.
