There is nothing magical about a large percentage of HN's members possessing a valuable skill(ie. programming, hustling).

Agree. But there are enough hacks around it. Dining out too expensive? Cook at home. Apartment too expensive? Commute to SF on BART or get an apartment in the Tenderloin. etc.
I would say have your contacts meet you in Haight-Ashbury, Northbeach or Golden Gate Park. You shouldn't miss out on the actual city while you're here.
