Yeah I would recommend this too. I've only used Dell Optiplex Micro series, no issues so far. They use external PSU similar to those in laptops, which helps with power efficiency.
Something with 8th gen i5 can be had for about 100-150 USD from ebay, and that's more than powerful enough for nearly all self-hosting needs. Supports 32-64gb of RAM and two SSD.
I second this, I have a 4 node Proxmox cluster running on MFF Optiplexes and it's been great. 32gb of RAM in each and a second USB NIC (bonded with the built-in NIC) makes for a powerful little machine with low power draw in a convenient package.
The Optiplexes look nice, but I went with the Lenovo m720q's for the PCIe slot ... 10Gb dual SFP+ NICs are cheap as chips on eBay and when you can migrate VM's faster it's a nice quality of life improvement for migrating VM's between proxmox nodes.
The market definitely sucks in EU too. A couple of years ago I could choose where to work as a junior dev. These days as a senior I'm happy to cling into my current job, and probably couldn't find anything if I got laid off.
Fresh grads in most other fields aren't doing either, but at least they aren't oversaturated as badly as CS is. Only ones doing fine are medical and social work professionals.
I agree. As far as human interaction goes, school taught me that to anyone who is different has no rights, and that to become successful and popular you should aim to be a bully who puts others down, even through use of violence. Similarly, to protect yourself from bullies violence is the only effective method.
I'm not sure these lessons are what society should be teaching kids.
Climate change has the potential to radically change weather patterns, possible causing severe disruptions to global food production. If that happens, I guarantee you the likelihood of a world war will be even higher than today.
Besides, there is no real energy shortage. Renewables and nuclear work very well for most of Europe. The only problem are the Germans who thought being dependent on gas supplied by an insane dictator is better than operating nuclear power plants.
Yeah, nice on paper, easy to shout all the time, and I agree. But - even if whole Europe went to caveman era, we won't make dent big enough to matter at all or change trajectory of future in any significant way. We are just little above 5% of the world, even if we pollute more than average its just a small drop in a bucket. But we are literally destroying prosperity in whole Europe, while most of the world gives significantly less fucks about this topic so we endeavor on some quixotic quest for glory where none is found.
That's the problem with well-meaning fanatics - you can't discuss consensus with them, middle ground is their ground only. Even extreme moves are never enough. So what we are seeing - people like trump who don't give a fuck about environment are winning, slowly but surely. There is no reversal in next decades, its hard to accept since I wish it to be true but it won't.
Inability of far eco left to have any sort of meaningful dialog and find middle ground is the reason why all these at glance well-meaning policies are going to backfire massively, and they already do as OP mentions. Why should we head to poverty while all developing world coast on us, steal our tech like germany's solar cells tech and we are just left behind.
I'll never vote for any green-related party despite being a massive nature and wilderness lover. Those people are literal personification of 'road to hell is paved with good intentions', IMHO a form of simpleton's eco-terrorism.
Me? I am insignificant. But I talk about opinions of large parts of Europe, just look at recent elections (and US is exactly the same). Extremism never leads to good future, just more extremes and inevitably conflict where few profit and most suffer.
Yes, people believe the same thing as you - that everyone who disagrees with them is unable to have a dialog - and votes for extremists who try to eliminate the people who disagree with them so they won't have to worry about it any more. Tale as old as time. Are you trying to blame that on the people you disagree with?
Banning phones is simpler, and has no downsides. You are at school to learn, you don't need a phone or tablet for that.
Besides, lots of things can be addictive and distracting. Personally I'm addicted to reading news. Had smartphones existed when I was a kid, simply banning social media and games wouldn't have been enough.
Well, people do need to reach you and people mostly aren't chained to their desks in an office any longer so you do need a phone of some sort. No, you don't need a tablet in general and I mostly never used one in a professional capacity.
The problem is not immigration or too many migrants, but rather the fact too many of them lack educational background you need to be successful in modern Western society. Mostly it's young men who arrived as asylum seekers without much education who fail to integrate and get marginalized.
Not really. I'm yet to see statistics which show highly educated migrants who come for work causing major issues. It's only a particular type of migration that causes issues with crime.
Society (and parents) still should have some responsibility on educating young people about career prospects of different degrees. Too many in older generations think any degree will land their children a job, and thus encourage them to study whatever they like.
I think school system is hugely failing students if they are not instructed and then capable of spending one or two afternoons on simply googling and looking at career prospects and what different jobs actually might entail. And then at least with minimal criticality thinking is that for them.
I am pretty sure there is no careers you cannot find some information on with rather simple searches.
This belief that "a degree, any degree" is sufficient must have started after I went to University (mid-90s), because when I was a teenager, it was drilled into us that we need to not only go to University, but we need to major in something lucrative. Nobody, from parents to guidance counsellors, was saying "Oh, just go to college and major in anything, it doesn't matter!"
