By most standards im fairly security conscious. IE: No listening devices/alexa/google home in the house. For the most part no cameras or mic's inside (obviously cant get past the phone thing). Generally i prefer to self host stuff (ie: my security cams are local only and have no interenet access.)
That said I DID setup a public shared album to share to a Dakboard....Its also one i share with family.
The URL is so long, from a privacy standpoint its less a concern. The facial details are already on the internet due to family sharing stuff on facebook etc. None of the photos are particularly revelealing and nothing i wouldnt care if they were on a billboard...So meh. I doubt i could be targeted to find it and anyone stumbling across it wont see anything they wouldnt see if they drove by my house and saw my kids playing in the front yard. We also dont religiously post to it, so its not like anyone is going to glean we are out of town because of something we put there.
TL:DR - meh, not much a concern on my end, despite other concerns that may border on tinfoil.
Not that I am blaming porn. I am not. But once the screens and bandwidth became large enough, UI's easy enough to navigate etc AND the devices themselves became quite commonplace, the always online mentality became one used much less for essential communication and business and transitioned more to a cultural way of life (porn is just an easy and funny way to drive that point home).
Doom scrolling wasnt really as much of a thing until Android and iOS matured enough and gained enough acceptance that it was no longer a status symbol. Heck i cant even tell you most of the social media apps these days, much less dating, but having some conversations with my younger cousins over break, there really arent many ways to meet folks outside of some of these apps (at least to them), which is sad. Apparently something as simple as "why not just join some type of IRL hobby and meet people that way" was scoffed at.
Doom scrolling is an intentional social media "feature". Before infinite scrolling, algorithmic feeds doom scrolling required some effort on the users part. Now you can just keep flicking your thumb up and keep getting more shit.
> algorithmically generated feeds based on engagement
This is one thing that really gets me.
Your feed is based on engagement. It doesn't have to be GOOD engagement, just engagement.
So when you angrily reply to a tweet you hate, that's engagement. You will be shown more content that makes you angry.
Most of the things people complain about in terms of what Twitter shows them, I don't experience. I don't follow people I hate, and if someone quote-tweets, I avoid replying. Definitely don't click the original tweet to see what other people have said.
It was. And I agree that plays a part. But Desktops are, by nature, much less accessible. Even a laptop is.
You didnt have people nearly as commonly doomscrolling on the subway on the way to work, or in the car, or in the living room around family, when the computer was restricted to a specific space/time etc.
agreed, chronological feeds have a visible signal to users telling them how far they've scrolled. If you're seeing posts from Feb of the past year, you've been scrolling too long.
Ad-based social apps (all of them) replaced that with algorithmic, so you have no real signifier of how long you've spent scrolling.
Tiktok takes this one step further by stripping the date from the videos.
Google seems to do this from ANY mails coming from some of the major VPS providers. They do the same on my linodes as well, despite me having SPF, DKIM, DMARC and even reverse DNS properly configured......
Luckily for me, its mostly just for my own usage and Im not using Google to send anything, its for things like email alerts to my google workspace account...
Many orgs will use location and connection types to filter this.
For example if i proxy my connections through a VPS or VPN i will OFTEN either be outright denied access, or at best get sent to a validation step (most often they shoot the email an verification code that i have to plug in).
I will often route traffic through a linode for reasons. And sometimes use a VPN here and there (ie: mullvad). In almost all cases this will trigger anti-spam measures on sites, some so intrusive its borderline unusable (ie: Youtube and google with recpatcha).
I would argue Microsoft is one of the better ones with respect to backports and longer term support.
Others (cough google cough) are on the other end of that spectrum. I would imagine Nintendo is somewhere in the middle.
That said, i still grabbed Digital copies of games. Plan is i can put multiple switches on an account and when they are traveling (ie: not connected) my kids can play games without having to cop 2 copies of every game.
Still need to get the second switch online to test this premise though.
An account can only have one "primary" Switch, which is the only one that will play games without an online ownership check. Secondary switches need to be online to play games.
I generally do my oil every 7500 miles using full synthetic.
When I take it in for service I assume they don’t use the expensive stuff and chnage it at 5k miles.
Either way, that’s 2x a year for me. I’m probably below average driving at just shy of 15k miles/year. I think the average is around 15k though. That would be 2-3 oil changes if you did them at similar intervals.
Some companies (ie: BMW) mandate more frequent chnages and higher octane gas etc etc. I don’t use those cars. If I can’t service them myself I won’t buy it (Tesla included)
I never understood why a car company would WANT to do better than a software company. Just make something with fully integrated CarPlay or Android auto with a failsafe for rentals or those without phones that don’t want to pair.
If you want the fully featured maps, guidance just pair your phone. Done. CarPlay is leagues beyond anything I have seen otherwise in an infotainment system.
I actually suspect this is a cultural thing with Japan and feature phones being a pretty dominant thing. Maybe they just don't see the priority in Carplay.
Car navigation unit for Japan was great (still great for navigation functionality), so perhaps people don't need CarPlay than other countries where car navi unit is poor. Though now most companies sell their car with "display audio" unit with CarPlay support.
