I just had two surgeries with general anesthesia. While I haven't had any cognitive effects in the task sense (surprisingly the opposite), I lost my sense of taste completely and kind of worse than lost. My brain seems to believe food is some kind of poison with some very odd anecdotal events. I tried to make myself eat my favorite rotisserie chicken. I was shocked to see it sliding down the wall, I threw the chicken. I have never been more shocked in my life. The doctor said not to worry, but it will be at least six months before it comes back. Everything tastes rotten, or chemical.

How can anaesthesia have such vast effects on taste/smell?? I only know that consciousness is being "removed" when using anaesthesia. And the most logical theory so far is that "Quantum coherence of Tryptophan Microtubules" is interrupted by any higher gas penetrating the crystal.

PS: Oh my god that sounds absolutely horrible! I had loss of taste and smell after Covid for 3 days, but it came back. I love perfumes and have a nice collection that I couldn't smell at all anymore. Also everything tasted and smelt like saltwater, even the trash.

But 6 months, I already felt tortured by not being able to taste anything anymore.

That is a COVID symptom? Maybe not caused by COVID, but same syndrome.

The urge to spagetti code is strong but must be denied.

Why cant we just be bilaterally honest? Everyone has at least one. Whats so wrong witb simply answering, "If I could do it over I'd spend my time differently." That seems pretty neutral and good enough to me. I trash talks no one, and you have conveyed honestly you would have spent that time better if you had a redo. I'd rather hear that answer over contrived, tell me what you think I want to hear any day.

If you have a hyperlexic child but the parents are not, nor are they well educated, most of the books quite early are going to male the parents uncomfortable. Even with educated parents, you get well meaning protective measures which are harmful to the child in the short and long term. Children even who arent big readers are harmed when their questions are deflected or ignored. Especially when it starts young. When your answers or you are uncomfortable towards an intelligent childs questions, especially as their parent, they pick up on that. You may intend well, you may want to shield them from the horrors inherent in their question, or prevent anxiety. But they still have the questions, they just find the answers themselves. They stop asking you for many reasons. Ultimately the result is you have left them alone with their questjons, and for bright children particularly the very young it does so much damage, that continues. They've in a very real way, been left alone by even very devoted parents.

Wonderful! Reminds me of the luggage from Terry Pratchett

you can try to pry my fountain pen out of my cold dead hands

Fascinating. I wish more people would post more quick lists and tables like this from their areas. So much information in a single document. I am a big fan of CRC books of reference tables.
