For me the answers is always be working on your value to whoever will pay your bills. And secondly, be good at communicating that value. A lot of people have skills but making sure you stand out from the crowd is a skill in itself.

Someone will always pay for a highly effective person, but if you can't demonstrate why you are, you will be in trouble.

It sounds like you are ready to move into a higher level of 'work'. Your skill means ability to influence and create impact to people and projects is far greater than the code you write. Maybe it's time to redefine your definition of who you are and the work you do?

Great advice. I especially like the advice on upping your communication skills and work-life balance. Look to how you can become more valuable, not how many crazy hours you can do. Many people can work long hours, it's what you do with them that will make you stand out.

Everyone has value to someone.

Most people talk about 'what they know'. The people who get hired (and get hired at a better rate) know how to explain the 'value' of what they know.

The ability to communicate your value is a skill that most people don't learn and work on. Getting better at this will make you stand out from the crowd.

I suggest you look at how people perceive your value. They obviously see you as being more valuable as being a manager than an IC.

I would look at how your 'brand' comes over and work on making sure people see the value you bring as an expert IC outweighs that of being a manager.

The more you increase your value as an IC the more costly it becomes to use you as a manager. Then you can look for a job that understands that.

I hope this helps

Why is he suggesting the changes? Because they are good practice or because they want to make an impact? When dealing with conflicts understanding the motivation of both sides is key.

Remote working can be very effective, but only if high levels of communication are maintained. Being able to see people's reactions and being able to get to know them is far easier when the camera is on.

The importance of understanding how people work (and what mood they are in that day) can not be underestimated if you want a team to be productive.

Some of my team leave an open video link on between each other as they do their work so they can grab a coffee together or chat about their plans for the weekend.

Move from admin to leading. Being able to think strategically, lead teams and understand code is a valuable combination.

Okay, a fair few things to comment on. Firstly, you can't turn back time. You have to design your new brand and reputation if you want to change your career trajectory. I suggest you look at your real value, strengths and weaknesses and be honest about how people see you. It does not seem that other people see you or your value as you see yourself. It sounds like you are angry, but if you use that emotion to push yourself to create a new brand and build the skills to demonstrate your value, you won't need any professional to deal with your emotions. I hope this helps.
