The 1885 cholera epidemic is a widely told myth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_1885_cholera_epidemic_m...

Well I was going simply off the article. Still, even that entry shows pretty consistent spurts of deaths hitting 3 - 5% of the population so it's pretty consistent with the point of the article (after multiple years of deaths they were force/spurred to act)

The SCOTUS just ruled that that doesn't work anymore.

You're mistaken, the SCOTUS ruled that in order to invoke your right to not self incriminate, you must state directly that your are invoking the 5th amendment only in VOLUNTARY conversations.

So when you are being detained, it is as it was before?

What do you mean ... after all what do you always ask right after a client says "it doesn't work"?

People who exclusively use Excel spreadsheets to program is a good example. Most people who use spreadsheets never use functions in a cell whose effect is to change the function or value in another cell.

The saddest part is that I would have been willing to capitalize SpaceX voluntarily, as an investor. Instead, Elon Musk steals from me through NASA.

On the bright side, SpaceX is so economical compared to NASA's past methods, that if it succeeds, we will all benefit. So what might be characterized as theft at one point in time, might eventually be seen as a great investment.

Only time will tell.

For all Elon Musk's libertarian rhetoric, he sure disregards it whenever expedient.

I actually think he's pretty moderate. His views are not mainstream, but I would expect someone like him to think in those terms.

OTOH, his pal Peter Thiel is pretty extreme. That's someone I'm not comfortable with.

Most libertarians do. It's called making money and all's fair in love and business.

The only transgenes in use for plant crops are for pest resistance. I don't know if they have anything for growth habits or metabolic engineering. All of that is done with classical breeding, and I might add that recently breeders have been breeding towards less resistance to drought; high response to irrigation and fertilizer means less energy "wasted" as roots leaving more for seeds.

They have transgene drought resistant crops that basically are no better than non-transgene versions.

However, if we stop the research now (by attacking the researchers through monsanto or by passing oppressive gmo regulation that forces them out of the industry), we will never develop superior drought resistant crops.

I believe that the precise modification of crops will be critical to responding to the stresses of climate. Classical breeding can only help us so much and the true impact of climate stress is still in the future.
