My RSI wasn't very bad, but each day it was getting slightly worse - it was reaching the point of being that bit too painful to sleep comfortably, the chronic dull pain was distracting, I was occasionally forced to take breaks when coding.

I started using a standing desk for back health and my RSI completely went away after about 2 weeks. I was doubtful at first and didn't let myself believe it would last (it makes that fall that much worse). But I'm happy to say it's been just under 6 months now and it's still completely gone.

If I were to guess I'd attribute it to the angle of my wrists when typing. Knowing you're not forced to change from a career you're passionate about is one of the best feelings I've had, and I hope at least someone on here can experience it by leveraging the advice in this thread :)

http://folding.stanford.edu/home/ I believe has a screensaver that will run simulations and has the results fired back to be collated. It also has a cool visualization :)

Does anybody know about international exporting restrictions for goods such as this? My freight forwarder restricts food and beverage, but not sure if it's technically classified as such?

Personally, the benefit it would give me over IM isn't sufficient enough to download, and convince others to (the latter being the biggest hurdle)

You don't have to convince anyone to do anything (nor do you have to download it). It just emails them the links.

That's a nasty one, but such an easy law to avoid. Use direct downloads or download movies, since the movie companies are protesting paying costs by not filing complaints.

I'd rather it didn't exist though.

Even in its nastiness it is sensible in its own right - $25 cost for the copyright holder to send a notice. The notice can also be challenged by the accused infringer.

Well, also you can't get another notice within 28 days.

And if I recall correctly, you have to get three notices within 9 months.

So basically if you manage to spend less than 1/3rd of your time "On Notice" you should be sweet as.

DISCLAIMER: IANAL

EDIT: Actually, fence-post error. The correct figure is ~2/9ths, as penalties trigger on the receipt of the third notice (so we can't count its period).

I think everyone forgot about the 3 strikes law here.

None of the big ISP's enforce it AT ALL.

I've heard a couple of small ISP's kick a couple of people off back when it was first introduced but since then there's been nothing.

Considering most of my friends here all torrent everything off The Pirate Bay (They don't use private trackers :p), I don't think I've heard of a single person I know get in trouble.

Telecom NZ would see that enforcing that law as a cost to them (they are pretty anal about spending money on things other than marketing), so they would probably not do anything until the government takes them to court.

My father got a letter from his small ISP saying that they won't be playing along the the three strike thing, and for some reason even if they wanted to they couldn't be sure which of their customers was the infringer. Heavily suspicious, but not 100%. So carry on, we got your back. He is just outside Tauranga.

Any idea what the command is for windows?

start /b "" "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --args --record-mode

doesn't seem to work

1. Close all chrome windows, open a cmd prompt, then cd to c:\users\user\appdata\local\google\chrome\application

2. run chrome.exe --record-mode ( /record-mode also works)

3. navigate in a predetermined way, then close chrome

4. run chrome.exe --playback-mode ( /playback-mode also works)

5. navigate in the same predetermined way. Those clicks will all work. Any other clicks will not work and result in 'cache miss' errors.

Create a separate profile or close _all_ open Chrome windows first.

  "c:\path\to\chrome\dir\chrome" --user-data-dir="c:\path\to\chrome\dir\User Data/test" --record-mode

--args is an option to the OS X open command, you shouldn't need it on windows. My guess is:

start /b "" "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --record-mode

Report back if it works!

No luck :(

You can just run the executable, you don't need to call start.

"C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --record-mode

I've tried that also but still no luck. I have the commands in separate bat files but I wouldn't expect that to affect it, or I might be using the wrong chrome executable?

It's unusable for the uber presentation. They're a full one or two minutes ahead

It still irks me that people can tout off success as though it's guaranteed for small experiments such as this without even considering elements such as the Hawthorne effect - 'changed behaviour during the course of a study may be related to the special social situation and social treatment they received'

Thank you!

Or just good ol' fashioned accountability.

Agreed. I don't understand preservational methodologies such as this. If the demand for taxis dies as a result of better alternatives, then let it. How else will we progress without being willing to give up our old habits?

It's not quite as simple as that -- taxis are widely used by homeless/indigent people as sometimes their only means of transportation to get to the doctor/employment/etc. These individuals may not have the correct technology or knowledge to use services like Uber.

If the taxi industry does die, cities should provide some kind of "summon-an-Uber" facility, perhaps through former payphone locations etc.

> It's not quite as simple as that -- taxis are widely used by homeless/indigent people as sometimes their only means of transportation to get to the doctor/employment/etc.

Wait, seriously? Taxis are pretty universally expensive, so it'd really surprise me if those without gainful employment were using them. Public transportation is far less costly, even if it is less convenient most of the time, so I'd figure that'd be used more in these cases.

That's assuming you live in a place with good public transportation.

A lot of people you wouldn't expect to be able to afford a taxi have to rely on them because they can't afford a car. It's one of the defining things about poverty, you end up spending more money on things than somebody better off because you can't afford the capital outlay to make it cheaper.

There are a lot of smaller cities without public transportation. Not just frustrating public transportation like San Francisco's MUNI or even complete jokes of public transportation like Los Angeles, but literally none at all.

Forgive me if i'm wrong but aren't people being actively locked out of the taxi industry in NY due to the current regulations?

I don't see how that relates to the grandparent post. I think the parent post is saying that a world in which cabs can only called by smartphone and can no longer be hailed in person would exclude some people and you are saying that some people who want to form cab companies are being prevented from do so. I imagine for the most part these are two separate sets of people.
