I have the same feeling about Dwarf Fortress. I absolutely love reading DF stories (see [0]), but the couple times I tried to play I just couldn't get into it.

I'm with you. Also hopeful that the DF steam release comes with a slightly easier to use UI.

If you want similarly hilarious stories, try rimworld.

I might be missing something, but I'm a little confused by this. Here's what that menu looks like on my phone (Galaxy Note 9) running the latest version of Android: https://i.imgur.com/uQaDDGG.png

Is there a different-looking menu that you're talking about on another version?

I don't have a picture, but most of Motorola phones have a mix of greys on it's menu, making it super hard to identify when it's activated or deactivated. IIRC activated is light grey and it really looks like it's deactivated.

This also sounds like a good example of problems that may arise with OEM skinning. Not that the OS maker is immune to flaws in design/layout, but you run into these minor changes that can be worse than "stock" for the sake of surface differentiation.

(My example of the same screen, slightly redacted)

I can't speak to the experiences of chapium, but my issue with Firefox is that I always experience a slowdown of some sort after it's been open and in use for a few hours. I have to go into about:profiles and "restart normally" to make it go away for another few hours. I never had this problem with Chrome. I'm on my third or fourth attempt to switch to Firefox in the last year and it's still happening. I'm tempted to switch back to Chrome, but I really, really don't want to.

It's not my computer either - my work PC, at least, is a powerhouse.

Also, I find Chrome's dev tools to be marginally better - but I'm not sure if that's just my familiarity with them over Firefox's.

Quick edit: there are some other problems I have with Firefox, but they're all relatively minor and don't bother me nearly as much as the random slowdowns and short freezes.

I always seem to run into performance hitches or glitchy behavior. Both Chrome and Firefox use very aggressive prefetching, but I find that the UI response time feels better in Chrome. Edge (the chromie version) is my go to for stay out of my way browsing.

`about:restartrequired` brings you to a screen where you can just hit enter, allowing for a restart without using the mouse.

That said, I don't think I use it much more often that I had to use `chrome:restart` when I had to use chrome.

I'm assuming it's the increase in people working remotely, thus having to use tools like Zoom and Slack to communicate more effectively with their teams.

I've had Ditto [0] on my PC for almost a year now, and I could probably count on two hands the number of times it's come in handy for me. Can you explain what is so great about having a clipboard manager? I feel like I'm missing something, and if it would become truly useful to me by using it a different way I'd like to learn.

It depends on your workflow. I sometimes find myself alt-tabbing multiple times to copy stuff over. Othertimes I accidentally overwrite my clipboard and lose some text that I was writing. Being able to recover it from the history is nice.

I use Pasteapp on macOS and FastKeys on Windows, which comes with other useful stuff, such as a shortcut for controlling volume by using the mouse scroll wheel on the right edge of the screen, macros, and a text-expander. The ones I use the most are:

As already mentioned by toomuchtodo, YNAB (You Need a Budget)[0] is fantastic. It's been my go-to for a few years, since before they released the web version. It's paid, but to me it's worth it for direct importing of transactions from my accounts.

There are, of course, a few free options that do a lot of the same things, but YNAB has been working for me for a long time and is well worth the money.

There's one of these in Eau Claire, WI, where I went to college [0]. I used to live across the bike trail from the sun, so I made the walk several times. Always blew my mind.

Anecdotal, but there have been several cases where I've been using Google Maps and it pops up a message saying that it found a faster route. All of these cases have been because of accidents or extreme traffic, and all have been on the same route (94 East from Eau Claire, WI to Madison, WI). As far as I know, Google Maps doesn't route traffic through side streets to save seconds like Waze does - it seems to re-route you when there are major delays.

As my middle school band director once said, "Even if I let go of my baton and it stabs someone through the eye, you must keep playing!"

I'll ad (pun intended) to the Pi-Hole praise. I set mine up a couple months ago and I absolutely love it. I've had literally 0 issues so far.
