Consider it broke. You are getting hugged to death by HN. Throw Cloudlfare in front.

Seriously .. if you are "expecting the BIG ONE any second" ... maybe you should move?

Every geographic region in the U.S. has a natural disaster risk factor. In Oregon we are overdue for a large quake, but I've prepared for this. In fact, taken what other regions face - wildfire, tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding - an earthquake sounds down right mild.

My preparation of a truck camper as an emergency shelter makes perfect sense to me. It is mobile, has a built-in generator but is mostly run by solar charging, provides enough space to sleep and live with heat and AC. Few people prep their RV's as an emergency shelter. I'm not sure why. Naturally, I hope my community does not have to face a major earthquake, but I do find it interesting when I get criticism for preparing. Am I coming across as paranoid, or prepared?

Earthquake hazard exists for literally the entire North American west coast.

If you move further east, you start to get other hazards: Hurricanes, tornados, flooding, forest fires. Take your pick, there's always something to worry about.

The important thing is to know what the hazards are for your area and prepare for those.

You could ask this of almost everyone living in California, and I expect their answer would be similar: the apparent benefits outweigh the perceived risk.

COBOL is easy. JCL is the hard part.

COBOL is good for dealing with money because it was built with the sort of numeric types required as a natural part of the language. Popular programming languages treat them as an afterthought and provide awkward library functions, if they have anything at all.

C# has Decimal built in. Enough precision for any money-related calculation.

Lots of languages have Decimals (and arbitrary precision integers for another example) builtin, but they're usually never the default.

Which of the top 10 languages from the Tiobe index have a decimal type baked* into the language?

* Is a type in the standard library "baked in"? I lean towards no, but I'll give the language A for effort anyway.

  1) Python - added to the standard library in 2003.
  2) C - no.
  3) Java - BigDecimal in the standard library.
  4) C++ - no.
  5) C# - built in.
  6) VB - Currency type kinda does what you'd want, but doesn't scale down very far.
  7) Javascript - no. (Use https://github.com/MikeMcl/bignumber.js)
  8) SQL - Yes. But check your dialect.
  9) PHP - No.
  10) Go - No. (Use https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/shopspring/decimal)

That's a fact. A couple of years ago, I had to brush off my JCL skills for a job. It reminded me of why I was so happy when I didn't have to use JCL anymore.

On the bright side, you can generate all your JCL with Rexx.

Or with chatGPT!!

This is what I've seen basically. Some companies meet the requirements of the law technically by putting a HUGE range like "75,000USD - 310,000USD". I would argue this is disingenuous by employers, but that is a problem with the law as written based on my understanding.

Bullshit. It's pretty common for young women to consent to do porn and then after the fact (weeks, months, years later) decide that they shouldn't have. If you sign a contract, you've signed a contract and need to abide by it. I'm of course against non-consensual stuff, but don't cry "I was a victim" later on because you've had a change of heart.

The other unfortunate reality of sex work is that women "busted" by law enforcement are of course going to claim their trafficked when it gets them out of a legal bind.

The root cause of all this a puritanical western society using the power of the state to impose their morals on others. What consenting adults do among themselves, even if for compensation, is nobodies business besides those involved ... and CERTAINLY shouldn't be illegal. So many of us are still conflating sex work with "human trafficking" ... and are party to the PERCEIVED problem by not understanding it can be legitimate work.

Women who consent is out of topic. Although how much some of this consent is meaningful is another can of worms.

So what kind of evidence do you need that a woman has been raped? Can there be such evidence that can’t be disputed by you or someone else? Can we ever say that a woman has been raped?

I’m seriously curious how you’re reasoning here.

> The root cause of all this a puritanical western society using the power of the state to impose their morals on others.

The West is hardly puritanical, porn and prostitution in general are large industries. The laws are not puritanical, Pornhub got a slap on the wrist relative to what they’ve done. Maybe it’s too puritanical for you, I don’t know.

> So many of us are still conflating sex work with "human trafficking"

That’s a straw-man. It can be argued that an increase in prostitution is positively correlated with an increase in sex trafficking. But that’s not like saying that they are one and the same, no one here is arguing that they are.

Sex work is legitimate work. They should not be shame and pushed to the fringes as we do here in the US, both by power of state and morality. I cringe at the number of people, mostly women of course, who are going to lose their livelihood because of "virtual Karens" imposing THEIR moral beliefs on others via power of the state.

What an absolute shame. Not particularly because I use OF, but because they feel the need to do this, due to public pressure, pressure from banks, etc. When are we going to stop moral policing (literally via power of the state and figuratively) consensual adult activities?
