my problems are 1. it's insanely expensive for what you get, and 2. background play was a feature everyone had until google put it behind a paywall.

finally, without something like sponsorblock you still end up with ads uploaded as part of the video.

I can't overstate how much I despise advertising.

The revanced player is a must on android https://github.com/ReVanced

Send the video to yourself via Whatsapp. It plays in the background.

> directly caused three people to kill themselves

this lie gets repeated so often and it's disappointing how willing people are to lap it up without an ounce of critical thought.

I am aware of the claims and the "news" sources regurgitating them. The evidence Kiwifarms is responsible for anything is remarkably shaky (lots of use of the term "has been linked to" and no real evidence for anything).

dating apps have reduced dating to a marketplace. The view that promiscuity is ok or even encouraged only exacerbates things

for myself (and most) the thought of my wife having sex with anyone but me is horrifying, repugnant and fury-inducing.

So if your idea of a happy long term marriage where we love each other incredibly deeply includes sex outside the marriage (i.e. swinging and similar) I'm going to struggle to see your point that the pair-bonding mechanism hasn't been broken. A totally non-negotiable element of the pair in my book is complete exclusivity.

I'm not arguing the way we live our life is the way everyone should live theirs.

Just pointing out that this thread is echoing a false dichotomy of "many partners, no long term partnership" or "long term partnership, one partner". There is a third option, for people who want it.

> I'm going to struggle to see your point that the pair-bonding mechanism hasn't been broken

A lot of people have a fury-inducing reaction to their partner speaking to a member of the opposite sex. Is a functioning "pair-bonding mechanism"?

Sure, I guess. In my view some are way too lax, others way too controlling. The fact the some fall into one extreme doesn't discount those that fall into the other.

women are the traditional gatekeepers for sex. All the "misogyny" handwaving in the world does not alter that fact. It's why the response numbers for men and women on dating apps are what they are

why is it "weird, creepy shit"? I think it's gross when people sleep around a lot and it's a major turn off. I don't see it as being any worse than finding someone attractive or not based on any other characteristics. At least people can control how much they sleep around; how tall you are is largely out of your hands.

It’s fun to have sex. Glad I could clear this up for you

I never said it wasn't fun, I said it was unattractive. Glad I could clear this up for you.

Totally agree with this. Even if advertisers weren't tracking me everywhere (which is a whole other massive issues), advertising even at its least offensive is designed to generate a want or need I didn't have before. I don't need to be convinced to spend ever more money on the latest gadget, no matter how "cool" I might find it. It's all just advertisers revving that hedonistic treadmill.

If you live in the city, advertisers manipulate you every waking minute of your day, bombarding you from billboards, on tv, on the internet, and are constantly shoving their disgusting garbage in front of your eyes in new ways; at petrol pumps, on your tv menu, right in front of you on a taxi cab.

Worse still, the more you pay to avoid this trash, the more you become attractive to them as someone with money to spend. I can't remove the ads as a walk about the city, but for damn sure I'll remove them wherever I can in my home. Pi hole, ublock origin, sponsor block etc, all running to keep this crap out of my life. If people wont pay money for what creators are making, and they can't provide it for free, I'm fine with it going away. It probably wasn't worthwhile to begin with - only "addictive".

Ads are a scourge and make me sick. There are no "acceptable ads".

Fully with you on that one. The fact of the matter is that most "free" content is fast food style content - you eat it because it's designed to be addictive. Consumers may feel like they want it, but that's just because it's there, prodding you, calling out to you, autoplaying the next video out of "convenience". If it were to disappear tomorrow, I'd likely spend more time reading old books, practicing programming for my entertainment

There was a time when the likes of YouTube and blogging were just a hobby, not a job for pseudo marketers. Replacing paid "influencers" and "content creators" with plain hobbyists again would be a wonderful thing.

I'll have to check that out. It's something I (as an atheist) feel as well. There seem to be a number of religious practices which align quite nicely with mental health practices. The ones that immediately spring to mind are responsibility transfer (short-circuiting anxiety spirals by throwing faith into an imaginary party who says it will all be ok), and "gratitude" practices - practicing thankfulness for what you have, meeting quite nicely with the practice of saying grace before a meal.

At first glance it seems foolish for a poor family praising their god for the pittance of food in front of them, but the idea that pausing to be grateful for what little they do have may make them feel better mentally (regardless of the wider injustice of the situation) has merit.

It seems like the process could be - do a thing, see positive results (maybe from improved outlook), interpret it as gods reward for pleasing him, codfiy the practice.

There's a fundamental difference between you sending files to a company server which are then scanned, and your own hardware constantly monitoring you for illegal activity so that it can report you to the authorities.
