Comparing "web sites" at large to "mobile apps" is an unfair comparison.
In addition to being able to get online through native mobile apps, smart phones also count for page views on regular sites as much as any desktop does.
Also, most serious web app programmers out there also have a mobile version of their web site available, so I don't buy the whole give-up-on-standard-web-apps-and-go-for-native-mobile-apps argument.
However, no one can deny the strong trend toward mobile computing.
I don't think it's about giving up on standards in favor of native in an either-or kind of way.
If you're building an app nowadays, ideally you'd have a web, mobile web, iOS and Android version at launch. Because you want distribution and need to go where your users are.
Thing is, the web is very crowded so it's hard to get attention whereas relatively, it's still wide open when it comes to the native app galleries.
You put all pains on the same level when, by definition, each person's pain is relative. It's relative to each individual's past experiences, sensitivity, life circumstances and so many more facts.
That's my definition of empathy: being able to understand that, no matter what the appearances or what I think I know, a lot goes into one's shaping of an idea/opinion on any topic. Life and death more than any other.
Also, remember that it's not all about you. Your anger toward somebody else's actions does not grant you any right to judge.
If you equate worth with money, in that case you are correct.
Hopefully there is a lot more than money to your job or, no matter how many hours, you'll likely not enjoy that work week.

Having kids will change you, no question. You would throw yourself under a bus to save your kids, absolutely. But let's not forget that you are still an individual with aspirations, ambitions, needs. Even after your child is born. Some people are better than others at repressing that side of their identity, instead evolving into a seemingly completely altruistic being. I couldn't.
The first year with my first born was hard but still magical (plus my wife stayed home with him so it helped a lot). After that, time to be used for myself was coming back, restful nights... Piece of cake.
Then I pushed for a second child (I always loathed the idea of raising an only child for some reason). My wife had resumed working by then and it was understood that she would go back after a couple of months of staying home with the baby.
That's when it became insanely painful for me, trying to protect my newly returned freedom (after my first born became more independent) while carrying 50% of the child rearing load with a newborn and a toddler.
I had to surrender (my self lost) for my own sanity and the well-being of my children. The lesson I think I've learnt is that to be as "successful" as possible at raising kids (whatever that means) you have to let go. A lot at times. And hope for the best.
People don't want a tablet, they want an iPad. It's that simple.
Does anybody seriously believe that the average consumer walks into Best Buy (or any other store) and say "Hello, I'm shopping for a tablet, what selection do you offer?".
And then proceed to compare side by side an iPad and a Xoom (or any non-iPad) to, ultimately, decide on the iPad?
As of today, this is the fantasy world those non-iPad tablet makers are living in, thinking they can compete on specs (but apparently not on looks or price).
OTOH, this will change with the Kindle Fire that will swoop the entry level tier.
I think this is accurate. Once the KF sweeps the low end, the tablet/iPad identity will start to break. I think there was a similar dynamic in mobile phones: there were phones and Blackberries, then iPhones along and finally most people started thinking about "smartphones" as a category.
And if you were in a folder before launching your app, it takes you back to the open folder. I never understood that part and it throws me off every time even with 1+ year of experience with it...
You can just hit the home button again. I always think of open folders as just another state of the home screen, just like any of the apps maintains a state.
He didn't say it was the best value on the smartphone market. He said it was (in his opinion) the best smartphone.
Not sure how price qualifies as a feature considering prices may change based on time, geography, carrier choice and other factors.
No matter how you look at it, a Lexus is a better car than a Honda Civic. You, as a customer, may not assign the same value to the actual features as a different customer may is the only difference.
I just see value as one of the features. Even reviewers who get the device for free will probably have an idea on what it would cost and thus have correspondingly higher expectations of it.
To continue with my stupid exampel, if I am asked to review a Lexus, I will end up reviewing it differently perhaps because I expect more. Heated seats not working well enough -- taking points off. Even in a comparison review some of this bias will leak in.
