That seems ripe for an alternative version of the popular “loops to goat farming” quote:
> I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.
The one that I find easiest to understanding is still the one that I wrote about a decade ago when I first had to work with OAuth 2. All others I understanding by mapping what they said to concepts in mine, and that seems to work pretty well.
It's not just a problem when you are an amateur. This is sth that every project should provide.
But there are also many projects which do. Sometimes you need to search a bit for it. Actually I would expect that most big projects have such documentation somewhere in some form.
One problem is of course that those documents can be outdated and don't go into much details. But they still will give you important insights and should be a good starting point.
The HTML email regex validation [1] is probably the best rule to use for validating an email address in most user applications. It prohibits IP address domain literals (which the emailcore people have basically said is of limited utility [2]), and quoted strings in the localpart. Its biggest fault is allowing multiple dots to appear next to each other, which is a lot of faff to put in a regex when you already have to individually spell out every special character in atext.
